When to plant certain produce: Part 2

The United States Department of Agriculture splits the country up into regions called "Hardiness Zones." These zones are grouped by climate and soil quality. Previously, Pantano Power Equipment outlined the best time to plant certain fruits and vegetables depending on which region you live in. In Part 1, it discussed the best planting times for Hardiness Zones 1 through 6. In this article, we'll take a look at the same produce and when it grows best in Zones 7 through 10.

Tomatoes
Gardeners in Zones 7 and 8 should plant their first tomatoes in mid March. They can continue to plant through late June. In Zone 9, tomatoes grow best February through April and then again in August. Zone 10 gardeners just have to shift the timing slightly, making January through March and then September the best times to plant tomatoes.

Watermelon
This fruit should only be planted in Zones 7 and 8 during March through May. In Zone 9, gardeners will need to plant watermelon by March or April. It will also grow here in July through August. The same growing period applies to Zone 10.

Lettuce
In Zones 7 and 8, gardeners can plant lettuce as early as the beginning of January through March. It's too hot during the summer months for lettuce to grow, so wait to plant again until mid September. The planting season for lettuce in Zone 9 is narrow. Plant lettuce seeds between February and March. Lettuce will thrive again in September and October in Zone 9. For Zone 10, it is recommended that you plant lettuce September through March.

Carrots
This vegetable has a similar growing season to lettuce in Zones 7 and 8. Plant in mid January through March, and then again in August through September. Carrots grow relatively well most of the year in Zone 9. Plant them anytime from September through March. Zone 10 is similar, but gardeners should hold off until October to plant the first seeds.

Cucumbers
Gardeners in Zones 7 and 8 who want cucumbers have to be quick. They have from April to May and then from August to September. In Zone 9, plant cucumbers from February to April. You can plant them again in August through September. The same applies to Zone 10, however, gardeners should stop planting in March instead of April.

Onions
In Zones 7 and 8, gardeners should plant onions at the first of the year and continue to harvest through March. Onions will struggle through the summer months in these zones, but they can be planted again from September through December. Gardeners in Zones 9 and 10 will get the best results from onion seeds September through December.
